    • 1 small onion, finely chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 pound ground beef
    • 1 large tomato, chopped
    • 1 cup tomato sauce
    • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
    • 1 medium carrot, peeled and diced
    • 1/2 cup frozen peas
    • 1/2 cup beef broth
    • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
    • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
    • 1/4 cup sliced green olives (optional)
    • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)

    Serving

    • Warm tortillas or white rice
    • Lime wedges
    • Chopped fresh cilantro for garnish

    Instructions

    Cooking the Picadillo

    1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
    2. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
    3. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
    4. Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned and cooked through, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks, about 7-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
    5. Stir in the chopped tomato and cook for 2-3 minutes until softened.
    6. Add the tomato sauce, diced potatoes, diced carrot, frozen peas, and beef broth. Stir to combine.
    7. Stir in the ground cumin, dried oregano, ground cinnamon, ground black pepper, salt, and ground cloves (if using). Mix well.
    8. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender and the flavors have melded.
    9. Stir in the chopped fresh cilantro, sliced green olives (if using), and raisins (if using). Cook for an additional 5 minutes.
    10. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.

    Serving the Picadillo

    1. Serve the picadillo warm with tortillas or over a bed of white rice.
    2. Garnish with lime wedges and chopped fresh cilantro.

    Tips and Tricks

    Adding Extra Flavor

For added depth of flavor, you can deglaze the skillet with a splash of white wine before adding the tomato sauce and vegetables.

    Customizing the Picadillo

Feel free to customize your picadillo with additional ingredients such as bell peppers, jalapeños, or corn for added flavor and texture.

    Making Ahead

Picadillo tastes even better the next day as the flavors have time to develop. Prepare the picadillo a day in advance, refrigerate overnight, and reheat gently on the stove before serving.

    Freezing Instructions

Picadillo can be frozen. Allow it to cool completely, then transfer to airtight containers or freezer bags and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat before serving.
