Meatloaf
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 cup bread crumbs
- 1 cup milk
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- ¼ cup ketchup
Topping
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon mustard
Instructions
Preparing the Meatloaf Mixture
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, bread crumbs, milk, eggs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Mix well using your hands until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.Tip: Ensure the mixture is well combined but avoid over-mixing as it can make the meatloaf dense.
Shaping and Baking the Meatloaf
- Transfer the mixture to a lightly greased loaf pan, shaping it into a loaf.Tip: If you don’t have a loaf pan, you can shape the meatloaf by hand and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- In a small bowl, mix together the ketchup, brown sugar, and mustard. Spread this mixture evenly over the top of the meatloaf.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C).
Serving
- Remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute, making it easier to cut.Tip: Use a serrated knife for cleaner slices.
- Serve the meatloaf with your favorite side dishes such as mashed potatoes, green beans, or a fresh salad.
Tips and Tricks
Choosing the Right Ground Beef
For a classic meatloaf, it’s best to use ground beef with a fat content of 80/20. This ensures the meatloaf remains moist and flavorful without being too greasy.
Adding Vegetables
You can add finely chopped vegetables such as carrots, celery, or bell peppers to the meatloaf mixture for extra flavor and nutrition. Ensure they are finely chopped or grated so they cook evenly with the meatloaf.
Storing Leftovers
Store any leftover meatloaf in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can also freeze slices of meatloaf for up to 3 months. Reheat in the microwave or oven until warmed through.
